BLAKE ANDREWS

Brouwer’s keen eye for human behavior is evident throughout the book, as he focuses not just on the racers, but also on the rich tapestry of interactions and emotions among the crowd. Each photograph tells a story, whether it’s a group of fans clinging to a fence, a couple sharing a quiet moment, or children playing amidst the bustle. The images convey a sense of community and shared experience, where the thrill of the race extends beyond the track and into the lives of those who gather to watch.

The physical design of Blauwhuis is as thoughtful as the images it contains. Hand-bound in our studio in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, the book features an open spine binding that reflects the raw, unfiltered nature of the event. As a final touch, the spine has been smeared with mud collected from the race track itself, adding an authentic, tactile connection to the scenes depicted within.

This attention to detail in both the photography and the book’s construction makes Blauwhuis a remarkable debut. It’s not just a collection of images, but an immersive experience that transports the reader into the heart of a small Dutch village’s racing culture, where the lines between spectator and participant blur, and the shared thrill of speed unites everyone.
